At the center of it all is a stuffed toy they call their “Prophet.” In contrast to the dim church, the girls spend their time together like a “real family.” The protagonist, Alexia, who was brought there against her will, gradually realizes—despite her confusion—that this place, free from unpleasant adults, is “a better home than her own.” Maybe what a lonely girl truly needs isn’t “rightness,” but a full stomach and friends she can laugh with. As she learns that the others carry the same kind of loneliness, she finds connection in sharing the same pain. Forgetting the misery of her life at home, she becomes absorbed in her days with the group. But at the end of those peaceful summer days, a terrible fate awaits. “Do you want to try again?” Within the church in its true form, set out to find the true ending. And face your own regrets and sins.
